Striking Teachers; We Are Not Going Back To Class Room Until Government Do The Needful... Western Region GNAT Chairman

The strike by teachers in public basic and senior high schools is to be sustained until concerns about teachers conditions of service and other matters are addressed.

Western Regional chairman of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Mr Peter Obeng Nyamekye, in an interview on Takoradi based Radio station Fox fm 103.1 social morning show dubbed "Asɛm Bɛba Dɛbi" who asserted the position, have vowed not to return to the classroom.

Mr Nyamekye said meeting between the teachers and the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations to address the concerns is expected today.

He says teachers are ready to put in enough work to make up for the lost time.

He added however that "What will bring us back to the classroom will be when we have a memorandum of understanding indicating clearly a roadmap as to what they will do in terms of our demands."

In a press statement, the unions stated that their intent to embark on the industrial action stemmed from the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) delay in addressing their conditions of service.

Meanwhile, students in over 500 public senior high schools will receive an iPad under the Ghana Smart School project while government have deducted teachers over 4 years ago in the name of purchasing Laptops for teachers but till date, they have not received any laptop yet.

Under this initiative, students will have access to e-learning materials as government commits to leveraging technological innovations to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Speaking with Some Parents, they appealed to the government to solve the issues with the teachers so that they can come back to the classroom and teach their wards because they can't afford private schools.

The Birim diamond discoveries led mining companies to invest along that river. However, not until 1929 did organized diamond mining begin following additional diamond discoveries made by Ghanaian prospectors in the gravels of Bediebewu streams near Tarkwa. In 1924, the Consolidated African Selection Trust (CAST) was formed and became the major diamond mining company in Ghana. Over 2 million carats were mined by CAST from 1924 to 1939. CAST’s early success led to investment in other diamond exploration and mining ventures in West Africa particularly in Ghana – resulting in the establishment of Great Consolidated Diamond (GCD).  1n 1963 Lake Asubone was created artificially in Asubone near Akwatia in Denkyembour District of Gh...
