UNICEF distributes items to support ‘My First Day at School’
UNICEF has distributed nose masks, veronica buckets, tissues, thermometer guns and stationery to some selected basic schools in the Greater Accra region, who reported at school for the first time in the new academic year.
The gesture forms part of efforts by the Ghana Education Service and UNICEF to support ‘My First Day at School’ initiative and to encourage the children to be at school while increasing enrolment at the basic level.
More than 200 new entrants were admitted at the basic schools which benefitted from the items.
The Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in charge of Management Services, Lawyer Anthony Boateng together with Country Director for UNICEF, Madam Anne Claire Dufay, Director General of Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye and staff from both Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service toured schools in the Ayawaso West District, Nima Cluster of Schools, Mamoobi Prisons Basic school Bethany Methodist school among others to mark the event.
Addressing the Media, Anthony Boateng urged the teachers and caregivers to encourage and support the children to stay safe in school amidst the influx of the Coronavirus pandemic.
According to him schools have been made safe for effective teaching and learning.
The Country Director of UNICEF, Madam Anne Claire also advised the children to take their studies seriously while adhering to the COVID-19 safety protocols
She encouraged learners to always put on their face masks and also observe all the safety protocols to remain safe.
The Director General of Ghana Health Service, Dr. Patrick Aboagye encouraged the children to observe the COVID-19 protocols to stay safe in the school.
He also urged staff to support the children whiles they as adults also stick to the precautionary measures.
