NIGERIA-GHANA LEANING EXCHANGE VISIT ON PRISONERS CLASSIFICATION AND PROMISING PRACTICE IN CORRECTIONAL MANAGEMENT A WORKING VISIT TO ANKAFUL MAIN CAMP PRISON
On Wednesday 13th April, 2026, Ankaful Main Camp Prison hosted a high-profile working visit from eight Nigerian delegations comprising Correctional Officers and three United Nations officials.
The visit, aimed at fostering a bilateral exchange on prisoner
classification and promising practices in correctional management, was facilitated by DDP. K. Abuaku-Ameyaw, Commandant of the Prison Officers Training School in Accra. The delegation was officially received by the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the station, CSP. Linda Anyema-Ma Apore.
The core of the visit centered on the prison’s vocational and agricultural initiatives. Through the “THINK PRISONS 360” exhibition, the facility demonstrated how inmate labor and skill building are being harnessed for meaningful rehabilitation and national productivity. The delegation toured several specialized displays highlighting the facility’s diverse
industrial outputs. Agricultural Productivity: The “Crops Canopy” featured a robust display of farm produce, ranging from plantains, okra, groundnuts, potatoes to palm fruits and many more. The visit also
highlighted successful animal husbandry projects, specifically in piggery, poultry, and rabbitry. Fashion & Craftsmanship: At the “Fashion Canopy,” guests viewed high-quality apparel, intricate beaded jewelry, and handmade footwear (sandals and shoes) crafted by inmates under the mentorship of Officer-Artisans. Carpentry & Joinery: An impressive collection of handmade furniture was showcased,
featuring “Angelic chairs,” shoe racks, ironing boards, folding tables, sofas and kitchen stools. The guests were so enthused about the shoe racks and many patronized these artifacts. At the peak of the program was the customized, *ThinkPrisons360* canopy that showcased processed foods. This canopy had bold inscriptions such as ; Imprisonment is not a barrier to creativity in Ankaful Main Camp Prison.etc. Under this mobile customized exhibition canopy, guests sampled and viewed various prison-made products, including pastries, “Tom Brown” cereal mix, Sobolo, Palm oil, yogurt, and fresh bread.Others savoured these delicacies made by inmates in their quest to gain employable skills.
The programme came to a halt when the officer in charged gifted the leaders of the delegation by decorating them with a thinkPrisons360 printed Kente sachs.
The visit provided a platform for the exchange of ideas between the Nigerian and Ghanaian correctional services. Beyond the exhibition, the visit served as a shared commitment to ongoing dialogue, ensuring that correctional facilities in both nations evolved.
