Reinstate Avoke And Five Others... Rawlings To Gov't

Reinstate Avoke And Five Others... Rawlings To Gov't.

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has waded into the brouhaha that has engulfed the once peaceful University of Education, Winneba, with an appeal to government to expedite action on the matter involving the dismissed Vice Chancellor and five other lecturers of the university.

In a confidential letter written and signed by the former President of the Republic to Hon. Albert Kan Dapaah, the National Security Minister and copied to the Chief of Staff, the Chairman of the Council of State, the President of the National House of Chiefs, the Education Minister and the Honourable Member of Parliament for Effutu, former President Rawlings hints of a petition he has received from the dethroned Vice Chancellor of UEW.

Mr. Rawlings notes that the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) duly investigated allegations made against Professor Mawutor Avoke and five others who were all exonerated. He emphasizes on the point that while the six were still being investigated, the then Governing Council dismissed all of them.

Though EOCO has since assoiled Professor Mawutor Avoke and the five other lecturers, they have not been admitted into the institution, something Mr. Rawlings describes as an injustice.

It would be recalled that the Emmanuel Abakah-led Governing Council of the University of Education dismissed Professor Mawutor Avoke, the then Vice Chancellor of the University and five other lecturers were dismissed for various alleged infractions which have since been investigated by EOCO and determined to be untrue.

Reverend Professor Anthony Afful-Broni, the current Vice Chancellor of the University, has been accused of engineering the exit of his predecessor in order to take over from him. Father Afful-Broni, for some unexplained reasons, has been dismissing lecturers and workers who are seen to be allies of the deposed Vice Chancellor.

This reign of terror by the current leadership of the University coupled with the unfair treatment meted out to Mawutor Avoke and the other five lecturers have informed former President Jerry John Rawlings to write to the Government to take a second look at these events and to ultimately restore the dismissed lecturers and Vice Chancellor to their respective positions.

Attached to this story is the letter written by former President Rawlings appealing to the government to have a second look at the issues involving the dismissed staff and the University.
